This article deals with the question of what this National Socialism was that needed to be overcome. Referring to the time after 1945, there are two different aspects: one centers the character of the NS-regime whereby the removal of democracy, social synchronizing, and the national socialist world view demand particular attention (reference date 30 January 1933); the other is the holocaust that is at the center of National Socialism (reference date 27 January 1945). How can the examination of both these developments of the Federal Republic of the 1950s and 1960s be described? What changes are recognizable? Where do they come from and what are the consequences for the understanding of National Socialism and the self-conception of Germans? What was the role played in this process by the movement of 1968?

This time, however, there was a noticeable
increase in books with a definite scholarly agenda. Thus, the title Ingrid
Gilcher-Holtey adapted for her edited volume from François Furet may well
capture the gist of a growing feeling: historians are eager to overcome the timeworn
recollections of movement apologists and their adversaries and they are
beginning to subject the 1960s to more objective analysis.

A captivating time, the 60s and 70s now draw more attention than ever. The first substantial work by historians has appeared only in the last few years, and this volume offers an important contribution. These meticulously researched essays offer new perspectives on the Cold War and global relations in the 1960s and 70s through the perspective of the youth movements that shook the U.S., Western Europe, and beyond. These movements led to the transformation of diplomatic relations and domestic political cultures, as well as ideas about democracy and who best understood and promoted it. Bringing
